UEFA technical observers

Two coaches with ample experience in the youth development field formed the pair of UEFA technical observers who compiled the technical report on the tournament in Hungary.

Ghenadie Scurtul, from the Moldovan capital, Chisinau, had played the same role at the 2013 final tournament in Lithuania. He obtained his UEFA Pro licence in 2009 after gaining B and A licence diplomas in 2006 and 2007. His playing career included a national title with FC Zimbru Chisinau in 1992, before he switched from playing to refereeing in Moldova’s top flight in 2000. In 2003, he became head of the youth department at the Football Association of Moldova (FMF), coordinating the country’s national youth teams. He has also served as deputy coach education director and grassroots manager at the association, and became the FMF technical director and federal coaching school director in 2009. Other posts include chairman of the FMF technical development committee (2011), UEFA technical instructor (2012) and member of the UEFA JIRA Panel (2013).

László Szalai, from the Hungarian town of Várpalota but long-time resident of Budapest, started with university qualifications in physical education and then, specialising in football, climbed the UEFA ladder of diplomas and obtained the Pro Licence in 2010. His enthusiasm for youth development prompted him to then earn his UEFA Elite Youth A licence in 2012. By this time he had acquired 20 seasons of experience with the junior teams at Kispest Honvéd FC, Budapesti VSC and MTK Budapest, before moving upwards through the age groups at MTK and Újpest FC, winning four championships and being named youth coach of the year three times. He initially joined the Hungarian national association in 2002 and returned as coach education director in 2013 after six years as head coach and academy director at Budapest Honvéd FC. The event in his native country marked his debut as UEFA technical observer at a final tournament.
