Germany set UEFA group scoring record

The 15 goals that took Germany through as Group C winners set a new UEFA men's final tournament record – and France's Amine Gouiri has also entered the history books.

The 15 goals that took Germany through as UEFA European Under-17 Championship Group C winners set a new record – and France's Amine Gouiri has also entered the history books.

Never before had a team managed 15 goals in a UEFA men's national-team final tournament group, the previous best being Spain's 13 in the 2002 U17 EURO. Having beaten Bosnia and Herzegovina 5-0 in their opener in Croatia, Germany then saw off Serbia 3-1 and the Republic of Ireland 7-0 to create the record. The 7-0 scoreline also equals the tournament's biggest-ever win, registered earlier at these 2017 finals by France against the Faroe Islands.

In all UEFA final tournaments, the overall record in a group remains the 19 goals mustered by England in last year's Women's U17s, largely thanks to a 12-0 victory over hosts Belarus. England went on to total 24 goals in those finals, the next target for Germany to match in their potentially three remaining games in Croatia (though Spain struck 27 at the UEFA Futsal EURO finals of 2010 and 2016).

Watch Arp's 13-minute hat-trick

Jann-Fiete Arp hit hat-tricks in Germany's first and third fixtures at the U17 finals, including one in a record 13 minutes against Bosnia and Herzegovina, but has been outdone in the group stage by France's Gouiri, who claimed seven goals. That equals the record by one player in any UEFA final-tournament group – for men, women and futsal – shared by Spain's Jonathan Soriano (2002 U17s), Gil Gomes (Portugal in the 1989 U16s) and Gouiri's compatriot Michel Platini, who bagged seven for France in the EURO '84 group stage.

Gouiri is currently one behind Odsonne Edouard's overall U17 final-tournament record of eight strikes, for France in 2015. Platini's nine for Les Bleus at EURO '84 is the record for any men's final tournament, the same tally achieved by Russia's Elena Danilova at the 2005 Women's U19s. Her compatriot, the late Konstantin Eremenko, scored 11 at UEFA Futsal EURO 1999.
