Barcelona 5-4 Sevilla (aet)
(Messi 7 18, Rafinha 44, Suárez 52, Pedro Rodríguez 115; Banega 3, Reyes 57, Gameiro 72(p), Konoplyanka 81)
Pedro Rodríguez scored his second 115th-minute winner in a UEFA Super Cup to give Barcelona a sensational victory against Sevilla in Tbilisi, watched by a competition-record 51,490 crowd.
In only the third minute Sevilla were ahead with the fastest-ever UEFA Super Cup goal. Javier Mascherano brought down José Antonio Reyes just outside the box and Éver Banega's curling free-kick gave Marc-André ter Stegen no chance. But Messi soon converted two free-kicks of his own and and Rafinha, in for the ill Neymar, made it 3-1 after Luis Suárez's shot was blocked by Beto.
When Suárez netted for 4-1 it seemed all over, but José Antonio Reyes pulled one back, Kevin Gameiro slotted a penalty and substitute Yevhen Konoplyanka, who had played for Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk against Sevilla in the 2015 UEFA Europa League final, turned in a cross from fellow club debutant Ciro Immobile.
Messi hit the post with yet another free-kick before the end of normal time but another half-hour was needed. Pedro was sent on and in the same minute in which he had got the only goal in 2009, against Shakhtar Donetsk, he pounced on a rebound when Beto parried – inevitably from a Messi set piece. A year on from losing to Real Madrid in Cardiff, Sevilla had again fallen to the UEFA Champions League winners.
