Rooney becomes Manchester United's all-time top scorer

Wayne Rooney struck his 250th goal for Manchester United – against Stoke City on Saturday – to overtake Sir Bobby Charlton as the club's all-time leading scorer.

Wayne Rooney has surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton as Manchester United's all-time leading scorer in all competitions.

United captain Rooney struck his 250th goal for the club with an added-time free-kick equaliser against Stoke City in the Premier League. He has reached the new landmark figure in 546 appearances, more than 200 fewer than Sir Bobby took to achieve his total. He is also United's top scorer in UEFA competitions with 39 goals – one more than Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Rooney, who will quit international duty after the 2018 FIFA World Cup, is also England's all-time leading marksman with 53 goals in 119 games. Sir Bobby is second on that list, too, having found the net 49 times in 106 matches.

Rooney, who joined United from Everton in summer 2004, is sixth on the list of all-time appearances for United; Ryan Giggs leads the way with 963, more than 200 ahead of any other player.
