Among the teams to progress in that way were Nice, who ousted 2017 UEFA Europa League runners-up Ajax after a 2-2 draw in Amsterdam, and Young Boys. The Swiss side were heading out of the competition until substitute Jordan Lotomba struck with a 90th-minute header that slipped through the grasp of Dynamo Kyiv keeper Maxym Koval.

Emmanuel Adebayor, meanwhile, was on target for new team İstanbul Başakşehir as they overcame Club Brugge. There were also second-leg wins, and subsequent qualification for Friday's play-off draw, for APOEL, Celtic, CSKA Moskva, FCSB, København and Maribor.

FRIDAY'S PLAY-OFF DRAW

Ten third qualifying round winners go into the champions route of the play-off draw, with the other five joining five automatic entrants – Sevilla, Napoli, Liverpool, Sporting CP and Hoffenheim – in the league route. The draw will be streamed live on UEFA.com from 12:00CET on Friday 4 August. There will be ten ties in all, with the winners joining 22 already-qualified teams in the group stage.
