History
• Founded after the end of World War II, the club initially had problems finding enough players. Following a friendly against FC Schalke 04 in November 1946, several players moved from Gelsenkirchen to Wolfsburg, and on 10 October 1947, Wolfsburg played their first game at the VfL-Stadion, which would remain the club's home until December 2002.

• Over the next seven years the team won several promotions and titles, reaching the top flight in 1954, where they stayed for five years. In 1961 Die Wölfe hosted Pelé's Santos FC in a friendly, losing 6-3.

• Wolfsburg spent the ensuing three decades in the second and third tiers, returning to the national limelight with a run to the 1995 German Cup final, losing the showpiece 3-0 to VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach in Berlin.

• They were promoted two years later after a spectacular 5-4 victory over 1. FSV Mainz 05, and following an initial struggle, Wolfsburg finished sixth in 1998/99 to qualify for the UEFA Cup.

• The catalyst for success proved Felix Magath's appointment as coach in 2007, and in his first season he led the club to an all-time high of fifth place. That was eclipsed in 2008/09 when Wolfsburg won the Bundesliga for the first time, Grafite and Edin Džeko scoring 56 goals between then. Armin Veh was at the helm for their UEFA Champions League debut in 2009/10.
