• Figo came to prominence in his teens, notably at international level, where he helped Portugal to victory in the 1989 UEFA European U16 Championship in Denmark and to the FIFA U-20 World Cup crown two years later on home soil.

• Spent six years at Sporting, during which he won his first major club trophy, the 1995 Portuguese Cup, before moving to Barcelona. Enjoyed five fabulous seasons in Catalonia, winning the Copa del Rey and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1997, followed by the Spanish league and cup double in 1998 and a further Liga title in 1999.

• Left Barça for arch-rivals Madrid in 2000 in a world-record transfer and maintained his world-class form at the Santiago Bernabéu, winning two Liga titles plus the 2002 UEFA Champions League during a five-year spell.

• A mainstay of the Portuguese national side for 15 years, his international career incorporated three UEFA European Championships and two FIFA World Cups, peaking with a dazzling performance at UEFA EURO 2000, after which he won the Ballon d'Or as European footballer of the year.

• Claimed the FIFA World Player of the Year crown a year later and went on to collect a total of 127 international caps − a Portuguese record − after captaining his country to fourth place at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. On 15 November 2011 Figo was given a commemorative cap and medal by UEFA to mark his century of international appearances.

• "I was fortunate and happy to receive an ovation on an unforgettable day for Portugal," he said after watching the national team win their UEFA EURO 2012 play-off at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica against Bosnia and Herzegovina. "We qualified with a big result [6-2] in a stadium I don't visit often but where I made many appearances for my country."

• Ended his career at Inter, where he won the Scudetto in each of his four seasons at the club.
