Ten-man Olympique Lyonnais failed to make up significant ground on Ligue 1 pacesetters FC Girondins de Bordeaux following a 0-0 draw at Toulouse FC, on a day when Olympique de Marseille won 5-1 to go above beaten AS Monaco FC into fifth.
With Bordeaux losing 4-2 to Stade Rennais FC on Saturday, Les Gones could have closed to within six points of their fellow UEFA Champions League contenders had they triumphed in south west France. As it was, Claude Puel's team will have been grateful to take a share of the spoils from Stadium Municipal after Jean II Makoun was sent off with 22 minutes remaining.
AS Saint Etienne, meanwhile, moved seven points clear of the relegation zone with an eye-catching 3-0 victory against Monaco, Blaise Matuidi (14), Gonzalo Bergessio (76) and Emmanuel Rivière (90+2) on target for the hosts. Monaco had won their last four league matches and were unbeaten in nine while Les Verts were without a home victory in the top flight since 3 October.
Marseille took full advantage with a resounding victory over Valenciennes FC in the late game. Lucho (33), Brandão (43) and Benoît Cheyrou gave OM a healthy lead before the visitors struck back through Carlos Sánchez (66). Mathieu Valbuena (77) and Mamadou Niang (90+1) both then got in on the act, however, ensuring Didier Deschamps' team of their most emphatic league win of the campaign.
