Anti-Discrimination

"I think the life skill we have to learn is to be respectful," said UEFA Champions League ambassador Ian Rush, in an interview ahead of this season's UEFA No to Racism campaign launch.

Now running across 60 matches in UEFA's top men's and women's competitions, the UEFA No to Racism campaign, witnessed by millions of fans at the stadiums and watching on television, aims to challenge discrimination and promote diversity.

Ahead of matchday three in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, when clubs, players and officials will all endorse the campaign, UEFA Champions League ambassador and ex-Liverpool, Juventus and Wales striker Ian Rush shared his experience of discrimination in football, and stressed how important it is that everyone is respectful on and off the pitch.

"It doesn't matter what nationality you are," said Rush. "We're all human beings and we're all exactly the same. We all want the same thing, especially in football: we all want to be successful. Whether they're in your team or against you, at the end of the day it's all about respect."

The former European champion added: "You try your best on the pitch, but at the end of the day it's a game. We have to respect every nationality and let's move from there. And that's when you become better. It's not just on the pitch as a footballer, I think the life skill that we have to learn, especially in today's day and age, is to be respectful."

From 6 to 20 October, the No to Racism campaign, which traditionally takes place during the Football People action weeks organised by UEFA's social responsibility partner the FARE network, promotes a clear message: we are all football people, wherever we come from and whoever we are, and we must all stand together against discrimination.
