Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) president Michael Llamas has been unanimously re-elected for a further four-year term at the GFA’s extraordinary general assembly.

Mr Llamas was elected as vice-president of the association in 2013 – the same year that Gibraltar became UEFA’s 54th member association – and subsequently became president in 2015.

At the assembly, which was also attended by UEFA Executive Committee member Michael van Praag, UEFA’s head of national associations development Thierry Favre announced that broad agreement had been reached between UEFA and the GFA on the financing of the purchase of the Victoria Stadium from the Gibraltar government.

“On 24 July,” Favre said, “the [UEFA] HatTrick Bureau took the decision to earmark €6.5 million from the HatTrick III & IV cycles, in order to give substantial financial support to the Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) for the purchase and upgrade of the Victoria Stadium.”

“UEFA will stay in close contact with the GFA as further support is required, and we look forward to the advancement of this project which, once completed, will allow them to host major international matches within their territory.”

Mr Llamas will now oversee the development of the stadium. The GFA president and other senior association officials recently met with UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, who applauded the commitment and dedication being made by the GFA to developing football in Gibraltar.
