Tribute: Wilkinson, Rutemöller, Morisbak, Vengloš

Coaching Coach

As UEFA looked to build for the future at the Coach Education Workshop in Bratislava, they also celebrated the achievements of four star coach educators.

Wilkinson leaves coaching legacy

UEFA has paid tribute to four football technicians whose work has made a significant contribution to the development of the sport.

Delegates at the 11th UEFA Coach Education Workshop in Bratislava were shown videos celebrating the impact of Howard Wilkinson, Erich Rutemöller, Andreas Morisbak and Dr Jozef Vengloš as mentors through their education of coaches and coach educators.

"For 60 years, I have been lucky enough to make a living out of something that I would happily have done for free," said Wilkinson on receiving a plaque for his long and outstanding service to UEFA's Jira Panel, as well as countless coaching programmes. UEFA coaching ambassador Sir Alex Ferguson led the praise for Wilkinson's "outstanding contribution" to football in the video homage.

Berti Vogts joined current Germany national team coach Joachim Löw in acknowledging the career of Rutemöller, who has also recently retired from serving the UEFA Jira Panel.

Dr Vengloš – a passionate advocate of coach education over a long period – received recognition for his long service, which included a spell on UEFA's Development and Technical Assistance Committee. Dr Vengloš's role in Czechoslovakia's 1976 UEFA European Championship triumph was chronicled in the reflective tribute.

Vengloš career celebrated

Morisbak completed the quartet to be honoured with a touching tribute shown to delegates. It was filmed in Oslo at a UEFA Study Group Scheme event, where the former Norway assistant coach provided the expertise for the 'fitness for football' sessions.
